  I first spoke with Mr. W****** M******* yesterday and he agreed to attend to my premises today between 11.00 and 12.00. The website looked quite professional and certainly Mr. M******* talked the talk and gave a good impression, stating quite clearly that I would only be charged for time spent on the job and not going for any spare parts that he did not have with him etc. For these reasons, and despite the fact that at £64 per 30 minutes he was amongst the most expensive of the plumbers that I spoke with, I decided to accept his offer of services. However, today at 10.30 he telephoned to say that he would not be here until some time between 12.00 and 13.00. When he and his brother did appear, they were polite and friendly, if a little bit too inquisitive about my personal circumstances and too talkative. However the job was completed without any major dramas in just over the hour, although this did include time spent waiting whilst his brother went back and forth to the van to retrieve spare parts (they had not brought them with them when they first came to the property, this despite me having advised what the problem was) answering personal calls on his phone and generally wasting time with unnecessary chit chat. My concerns were further heightened when W******s brother started writing the invoice before the job had been finished and then when he presented me with the invoice he even tried to tell me that they had been there for more than 90 minutes, never mind 60, before having to admit after checking his phone (?) that even by that stage we were just over the hour! The brother then tried the old trick of "Well, if you pay cash I can knock a bit off the invoice", failing to realise that this was still more than the hour that they had spent on the job. In the end, they agreed to charge for the 60 minutes, which was slightly more than the job had taken. No great drama, but they did make it quite clear that they would not be doing any other work for me, which was rather silly given that as a landlord with a sizeable portfolio of my own properties and someone who is always approached by other landlords looking for advice about reliable tradesmen, I am in a position to put quite a bit of work their way, or not. They also seemed not understand, or if they did, took exception to the fact that as a responsible landlord, I do not allow any tradesman to remain alone in any property, as much for his benefit as for that of my tenants. At the end of the day, an ok job if at the top end of the price scale. But as for all his nonsense about being there when he said he would be there and charging a fair price only for the time on the job etc., what a load of rubbish. Just another plumber like any other.
